Please join Bok Tower Gardens for a Scrub habitat improvement event at the FWC Lake Blue Scrub site in Auburndale!

We'll be creating open sand gaps within an acre area using brush cutters to remove dense overgrown runner oaks, as part of our research into the response of listed species to habitat changes - we’ll need people for both cutting and for moving the cut material out of the way.

The target is to remove roughly 60% of the canopy to create preferred habitat for the many different scrub species found at Lake Blue, including the federal and state endangered Scrub Lupine (Lupinus aridorum), Scrub Morning Glory (Bonamia grandiflora), and Scrub Blazing Star (Liatris ohlingerae), just to name a few.

Scrub habitat is becoming increasingly rare and the few remaining parcels are also becoming increasingly difficult to manage, and particularly difficult to manage with prescribed burn, due to the proximity of residential areas.

Physical removal of overgrown runner oaks and sand pines can help improve habitats especially when faced with challenges to burn these areas.

Please wear good closed-toe footwear, long pant, long sleeves, and a hat. Please bring your work gloves and a hiker's water bottle or similar. We'll have cold drinking water, snacks, and all the tools needed.
