FWC are looking for volunteers to assist in a survey for gopher tortoise burrows at a property in east Spring Hill that is soon to be developed. We are working with various partners and the developer to relocate gopher tortoise to a suitable relocation before construction commences.  We will be doing a 100% site survey of the property which will be followed by excavations of all identified burrows. An Incidental Take Permit exists for this property.

All training will be provided onsite but there is an E Learning presentation and quiz available here (the password is gopher1*). It is highly recommended that you avail of this training if you have not already done so. The E learning material addresses the life history of gopher tortoise,  how to identify burrows and information on the importance of this keystone species.

What you need to bring with you?

We recommend that you wear closed toed shoes and long pants as the vegetation can be thick and thorny . Please bring a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle. We will have a cooler of ice-water onsite.

How to register?

You can register for this event using the FWC Calendar or by emailing Brendan O'Connor (

Where to meet?

We will be meeting onsite at 9AM on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Because this is a private property the address will be sent to those volunteers that register for the event.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Brendan O'Connor at
