This is part of two day volunteer work effort at Highlands Hammock State Park: the first day is Friday 4/26 and the second is Saturday 4/27. Hope you can join us on one or both days!

You'll be moving through scrub habitat and cutting down small sand pines using loppers and hand saws, helping to maintain this area as healthy habitat for scrub jays. This effort must be done by hand to avoid damage to rare/endangered species.

This project will greatly help the existing management effort for scrub habitat at the state park – your effort will allow this critical need to be accomplished where it otherwise wouldn't occur.

We're planning a nature program for the participants after the work effort … details coming.

We'll be meeting in the parking area near the entrance gate (directions below)

Please dress for working in brush (sturdy shoes, long pants, long sleeves, and a hat), and bring your work gloves. You'll also want to bring a hiker's water bottle or similar (we'll have plenty of cold drinking water). All tools will be provided.

There are restrooms available in the campground area.

Directions:

Take US 27 towards Sebring and the southwest corner of Lake Jackson. At the corner of US 27 and Hammock Road, turn west on Hammock Road. (Hammock Road is between the Gates service station on the north and Inn on the Lakes to the south.) Follow Hammock Road 3.9 miles into the state park.
