Help clean up debris along a road by the Lake McLeod unit of the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge,

and then go on a guided nature hike!

The Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge is the first Refuge designated primarily for the preservation of endangered plants, and is composed of four units. Thirty-one rare plants can be found within the project boundary, 22 of them federally listed as endangered or threatened, and nine candidates for such listing. Four federally listed vertebrates as well as 40 rare invertebrate species are also present. The Lake McLeod unit has 11 listed plants and is the only protected site for scrub lupine.

Please bring your work gloves. Drinking water and all other equipment needed will be provided.

Please wear sunscreen,sturdy closed-toe shoes, long pants/long sleeves, and a hat. You may wish to bring insect repellent and a hiker's water bottle or similar to carry drinking water.

Meet on Gerber Dairy Road by the Refuge 


Navigate to Lake Wales on US27, to Eagle Ridge Mall. The traffic light is Thompson Nursery Rd (540A to the west and 17A to the east). Turn west on Thompson Nursery Road, which will become Eagle Lake Loop Rd. (after the intersection with Rifle Range Rd). Continue on Eagle Loop Rd and take a left on Gerber Dairy Rd. The property is on the right, about 1 mile south on Gerber Dairy Rd (look for the chain link fence on the left side of the road.)
