This program series includes 5 classes offered every other Thursday beginning in February. Please be sure your student can attend all classes before enrolling as they are typically in high demand. Enrollment is for all 5 classes. All classes are free, children are required to bring bagged lunch and dress appropriately for the outdoors. All classes include outdoor activity.

School Year Program Series for Outdoor Education

Spring 2018


February 15th 10:30 AM                        Chinsegut Habitats: Upland Pine Forests, Mesic Hardwood Forest and Basin Marsh – This program will begin with a talk on the geologic formation of Florida and the various natural areas that make up Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area. Students will view various soils through microscopes, have fun creating their own Karst topography models and learning about the plants and animals of Chinsegut. This class will be hands-on and will include a hike of just under 1 mile.

March 1st 10:30 AM                              Exploring a Basin Marsh - During this program children will visit May’s Prairie to collect wildlife, sample and learn about water quality and Florida’s productive wetlands. This program requires a .75 mile hike each way and participants will get wet. Please plan accordingly with footwear for water use and towels/ change of clothing.

March 15th 10:30 AM                            Junior Naturalist – During this program students will be offered the chance to participate in a mock scientific study of the wildlife of Chinsegut. Students will get to use equipment that scientists and volunteers with the Fish and Wildlife Commission use to study wildlife such as a gopher tortoise burrow scope and telescoping camera pole. We will look at various methods used to collect wildlife and document and record our findings scientifically.

March 29th 10:30 AM                            Outdoor Skills – Normally during this program one of two disciplines is taught, map and compass navigation or archery but this time we will squeeze in both. Students will learn how to navigate using an orienteering compass then have the opportunity to participate in an introductory archery course with NASP certified instructors.

April 12th 10:30 AM                              Wild Florida – Many people live in Florida for years and even decades without realizing the work that goes into keeping natural areas ideal examples of Florida habitat for both people and wildlife. During this class we will be getting our hands dirty in learning about land management and careers in land management. The class will work on an exotic removal project then watch a prescribed fire demonstration. Come ready to work in the dirt, the center will provide gloves and water.

All classes run 3.5 hours, please bring a bagged lunch or snack, plenty of fluids and dress appropriately for the outdoors.
