We’ll be removing debris from Highlands Park Estates in areas where prescribed burns have been recently conducted for habitat restoration.

Removing this debris will help restore the natural habitat and create a safer environment for humans and wildlife. Several scrub jay families live in the area where we will be doing cleanup.

Some of the debris is in an area where there was a recent prescribed fire. Be sure to wear clothing that you don't mind

getting dirty as soot from vegetation will be going home with you.

We'll have all the tools required. You'll want to bring good gloves and a hiker's water bottle, and wear long pants/long sleeves and a hat. The terrain is very sandy and uneven, and please wear sturdy shoes.

Meet at the gate at the intersection of Washington and Springdale Street and park along Springdale.

Directions:

Navigate to the town of Lake Placid and turn towards Royce WMA on County Road 621. Turn left (north) onto Hallmark Ave and drive approximately 2.2 miles to Washington Blvd. Turn left on Washington and drive approximately 1/2 mile to the intersection of Springdale and Washington. Park along Springdale St.

The Highlands Park Estates tract of FWC connects the Royce Wildlife Management Area to nearby Lake Wales Ridge ecological areas. It is home to several families of Florida scrub jays and a variety of listed plants. Recently, large portions of the property have been fenced to reduce habitat degradation and enhance restoration efforts.
