Lake Okeechobee planting Wed. 1/15

We will be riding an airboat to get to the sounth end of Lake Okeechobee to plant pondweed. Pondweed is a native aquatic plant that provides refuge for fish and small animals and food for ducks and largemouth bass.

  • Where: Pond located South of US-27 and West of Airglades Blvd. (see map below). 

    You will  be driving on US-27 towards Airglades Airport (1090 Airglades Blvd, Clewiston, FL 33440). Once you turn onto Airglades Blvd. you will cross a canal and immediately after you  will see a pond on the right side. This is our meeting point.

  • What: We will dig up pondweed plants from a pond and then, we will go on an airboat to the planting site on the lake to plant the pondweed.
  • Logistics: Pondweed is an aquatic plant that is easy to dig up and plant. We will be working in about 1-1.5 feet of water.   

       Wear comfortable clothe that can get wet and dirty or bring boots or waders to avoid getting wet. Water could be chilly.

       Bring a change of clothe to change into dry clothe after the planting, a jacket for the airboat (it can be windy), sunglasses (eye protection) and a pair of gloves if you wish.

       Bring lunch and water. We will have extra water to refill your bottles.
