Want to learn more about butterflies? You can learn while helping with this important citizen science research project!
The butterfly census is a monthly count of butterfly species at Chinsegut and Big Pine Wildlife and Environmental Areas. Volunteer Bev Hansen is your guide. You will learn identification skills with binoculars to get a close up of the unique and intricate wing patterns of butterflies. Binoculars are provided!
Where to meet: Chinsegut Conservation Center

Time: 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (group leaves by 9 a.m. be early!)
What to bring: Binoculars (extras are available), water bottle, sunscreen
What to wear: Hat, comfortable walking shoes recommended
Restrooms are available at Chinsegut Conservation Center and Big Pine WEA
The butterfly census is conducted the last Friday of each month from March through October. The field data you collect on these surveys are reported to the Butterfly Monitoring Network based at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Your bonus: Bev is one of the best birders in the county. You may learn to identify birds by their calls while you are out with her.
