Pioneering Skills Day

Join us at Chinsegut for one or all of the day full of classes related to pioneering skills! This is a day full of activities that include essential skills for the early settlers of Florida or for modern homesteaders. Different activities and classes will occur at different times throughout the day. All classes are free. Some classes require registration in advance by calling (352) 754-6722.

Please note this is not a family festival as in years past, this is a series of classes, lectures and activities occurring throughout the day in distinct time slots. Some classes have limited attendance and require pre-registration.

10:00 AM - 3:00 PM: Demonstration: Home subsistence farming, vegetable gardening booth. The Master gardeners of the UF/IFAS Hernando extension office will have a booth set-up for folks to stop in during the day and get information on successfully taking your garden from seed to harvest. Different methods of growing will be on display and well informed master gardeners will be available to help with questions and reference materials. This does not require registration, stop in any time.

10:00 AM - 11:30: Chicken keeping for the Modern Homesteader. Join Ali Baylor of Golden Rainbow Ranch for an instructional class on how to successfully keep chickens. Ali will discuss feed needs, monitoring health of the flock and good accepted practices for coop upkeep. This class is Limited to 25 participants. Those interested may register through calling (352) 754-6722.

10:00 - 12:00 AM: Archery for Beginners. Join Conservation Center staff and volunteers for a simple introduction to archery. All equipment for program will be provided by the Center. The class will run the full 2 hours and is limited to 20 participants ages 10+.

12:00 PM - 1:30 PM: Turkey Calling. Join turkey caller Toby Benoit for a lesson on talking turkey. This program does not require registration and is ideal for ages 8+. Toby will bring several calls and share the tricks to getting the attention of turkeys.

12:00 PM - 2:00 PM: Home Grown Food for he Beginner. Join Master gardeners from the Hernando UF/IFAS extension office for an informative session on taking your garden from field to table, what is appropriate for the time of year in our "zone" and so much more. Master Gardeners are also more than happy to answer related questions during this event. Learn how to modern homestead, save some money and reduce pesticide and overwatering to control the quality of the foods you eat. No registration is required, this program is ideal for adults and older children.

2:00 - 3:00 PM: Palm Leaf Weaving. While it might not make the most beautiful basket, palm leaves and the ability to weave them can be a useful survival skill and was a useful hunter gatherer skill for early settlers. Learn form outdoors woman extraordinaire Jeanene of Not-A-Clue Adventures how to select the right leaf and weave a functional palm leaf basket. This skill activity is ideal for ages 10+. 3:00 - 4:30 PM: Fishing. Casting, catching and some of the important in between stuff. This activity is for kids ages 6-12 and requires pre-registration by calling (352) 754-6722. Pre-registration ensures we have plenty of equipment available for each child.
