This is the new date for this workday (original effort earlier this year had to be postponed). 

We’ll be removing several hundred feet of plastic barrier screening used in monitoring Gopher Tortoise activity. 

This effort will help return the site to a natural state.

Wildlife barrier we'll be removing

We'll be moving along the barrier with an off-road vehicle, rolling it up and pulling the small posts, and placing the removed material in the vehicle. 

Some sections of the barrier are in brushy areas and on rough terrain, Please dress for working in brush, wear sturdy shoes, and bring your work gloves. The vehicles will have plenty of drinking water. 

The US Hatchineha unit is located along Lake Hatchineha Road about 9 air miles east of Dundee. 

Please see the approximate address and map location above. We'll be meeting at the entrance gate located on the south side of Lake Hatchineha Road. 

The Hatchineha Unit is part of the US FWS’s  Everglades Headwaters National Wildlife Refuge. The unit is publicly accessible and is also a FWC Wildlife Management Unit. Hatchineha consists of 1,460 acres of pine flatwoods, scrub, and marshes adjacent to Allen David Broussard Catfish Creek Preserve State Park in Haines City.
