FWC Holmes is located to the east of Lake Placid and is new to most Ridge Rangers. We'll be cutting down sand pines at this site to create more useable habitat for Scrub-Jays. This type of pines will take over a Scrub Habitat, eliminating homes for endangered Scrub-Jays and harboring Scrub-Jay predators. To minimize the summer heat, we'll be starting at 8 AM and wrapping up at 11 AM

The FWC Holmes Unit is part of the Lake Wales Ridge Wildlife and Environmental Area. The most distinctive natural community on the Lake Wales Ridge is scrub, home to one of the rarest collections of plants and animals in the world. Healthy scrub has the appearance of a miniature forest with trees seldom taller than 10 feet and open patches of sand. The WEA contains 20 of 22 federally listed plant species known to occur on the Lake Wales Ridge
